Fancy Dress and Costume Hire

The Chequer Mead Fancy Dress and Stage Costume Store was launched in October 2008 after nine months of intensive work by talented volunteers who sorted, washed, and mended costumes donated by local Amateur Dramatic groups  including Ace Theatre Company, EGOS and Copthorne Players and later costumes from Village Players and Forest Players.

New costumes were created to add to our Fancy Dress collection and we continue to receive donations of 20th Century clothes and material found in various attics!

We were very fortunate that the portacabin, formerly the theatre office, became available and half the understage area during the course of 2008. We have had very generous help from the Chequer Mead Friends and were successful in gaining a grant of £250 from the West Sussex County Local Committee.

We are run by a happy band of volunteers, all of whom are capable seamstresses and have been associated with theatre costumes over many years.  Apart from minimal running costs all monies go to the theatre.

There are two aspects to the hire facility, Fancy Dress for themed parties and Stage Costumes for plays, musical, community events, school performances and so on.

We can dress you from prehistory, through Roman, Oriental, Anglo Saxon to Medieval, Tudor, Regency, Victorian, Edwardian to the 1980s. Our prices range from £5 to £20.

We are open on Saturday mornings from 10.00 am till 1.00 pm.  Special appointments can be made for Amateur Dramatic Societies, Community Groups and other group events.
